Predicting Photometric and Spectroscopic Signatures of Rings around Transiting Extrasolar Planets
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present theoretical predictions for photometric and spectroscopic signatures of rings around transiting extrasolar planets. On the basis of a general formulation for the transiting signature in the stellar light curve and the velocity anomaly due to the Rossiter effect, we compute the expected signals analytically for a face-on ring system, and numerically for more general configurations. We study the detectability of a ring around a transiting planet located at a = 3AU for a variety of obliquity and azimuthal angles, and find that it is possible to detect the ring signature both photometrically and spectroscopically unless the ring is almost edge-on (i.e., the obliquity angle of the ring θ is much less than unity). We also consider the detectability of planetary rings around a close-in planet, HD 209458b (θ ≈ 90 − iorbit ≈ 3.32), and Saturn (θ ≈ 26.7) as illustrative examples. While the former is difficult to detect with the current precision (photometric precision of 10 and radial velocity precision of 1 m s), a marginal detection of the latter is possible photometrically. If the future precision of the radial velocity measurement reaches even below 0.1 m s, they will be even detectable from the ground-based spectroscopic observations. Spectroscopic Studies of Transiting Planetary Systems
As of December 2007, radial velocity measurements and planetary transit surveys for nearby stars have already identified more than 250 planets around other stars. These “extrasolar planets” opened a new field of astronomy in the past decade. The discovery of many extrasolar planets have revealed the existence of exotic planets such as “hot Jupiters” and “eccentric planets,” showing the diversit...
متن کاملSurvey for Transiting Extrasolar Planets in Stellar Systems ( STEPSS ) : The Frequency of Planets in NGC 1245
We present first results from the Survey for Transiting Extrasolar Planets in Stellar Systems (STEPSS). Our goal is to assess the frequency of close-in extrasolar planets around main-sequence stars in several open clusters. By concentrating on main-sequence stars in clusters of known (and varied) age, metallicity, and stellar density, we will gain insight into how these various properties affec...
متن کاملInterpreting and predicting the yield of transit surveys: Giant planets in the OGLE fields
Transiting extrasolar planets are now discovered jointly by photometric surveys and by radial velocimetry, allowing measurements of their radius and mass. We want to determine whether the different data sets are compatible between themselves and with models of the evolution of extrasolar planets. We further want to determine whether to expect a population of dense Jupiter-mass planets to be det...
متن کاملUsing Transit Timing Observations to Search for Trojans of Transiting Extrasolar Planets
Theoretical studies predict that Trojans are likely a frequent byproduct of planet formation and evolution. We examine the sensitivity of transit timing observations for detecting Trojan companions to transiting extrasolar planets. We demonstrate that this method offers the potential to detect terrestrial-mass Trojans using existing ground-based observatories. We compare the transit timing vari...
متن کاملExpected Detection and False Alarm Rates for Transiting Jovian Planets
Ground-based searches for transiting Jupiter-sized planets have so far produced few detections of planets, but many of stellar systems with eclipse depths, durations, and orbital periods that resemble those expected from planets. The detection rates prove to be consistent with our present knowledge of binary and multiple-star systems, and of Jovian-mass extrasolar planets. Space-based searches ...
